MATT HAIMOVITZ’S “AFTER READING SHAKESPEARE” TOUR EMBRACES WORDS IN SONG, IN COLLABORATION WITH SOPRANO LISA DELAN AND COMPOSER GORDON GETTY

Two Cabaret Evenings In Los Angeles (May 13) and Montreal (May 19) Feature Music from Haimovitz’s New CD After Reading Shakespeare and New Works by Gordon Getty and Luna Pearl Woolf

Haimovitz will be Featured Soloist in Performances of Ligeti’s Cello Concerto And Stephen Dankner’s Klezmer Fantasy At Disney Hall With Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra On May 10 & 11

On the heels of a Juno nomination and a rave review in the New Yorker, Matt Haimovitz’s “After Reading Shakespeare” project is evolving to embrace words both sung and spoken in a collaboration with soprano Lisa Delan, pianist Kristen Pankonin and composer Gordon Getty. Two literary-themed cabaret evenings at The Mint in Los Angeles and Sala Rossa in Montreal feature music from Haimovitz’s After Reading Shakespeare CD as well as new works for soprano, cello, and piano by composers Gordon Getty and Luna Pearl Woolf.

During the concerts, Mr. Getty will narrate Shakespeare quotations interwoven with Matt’s performance of Ned Rorem’s landmark solo cello suite, After Reading Shakespeare. Delan and Pankonin offer Lewis Spratlan’s Ophélie, a setting of the poem by Rimbaud, “the French Shakespeare,” and Haimovitz will perform Spratlan’s solo cello work Shadow, in which the composer quotes the song Ophélie in a movement titled “Rambo/Rimbaud”.

Specially for this event, Mr. Getty has created a new arrangement of an aria from his opera Plump Jack, on the life of Shakespeare’s Falstaff, which will receive its world premiere. Also receiving a world premiere is Luna Pearl Woolf’s Odas de Todo el Mundo, a work for soprano, cello, and piano commissioned by Delan on the evocative poetry of Pablo Neruda. Delan, Haimovitz and Pankonin recently recorded this work for a forthcoming PentaTone Classics release due in June.
